of railway expansion in the late 1870's; to 'Ja'1260 big mainline power
from the zenith of steam railways in NZ in the 1950's.

Looking for somewhere interesting to take the children or grandchildren on the weekend?
Somewhere where the children have plenty of space to be children, away from their Playstations?
Perhaps a place not too far away, where there is good choice of places to get some lunch and enjoy it in pleasant, quiet country surroundings?
Enjoy a picnic lunch around the pond in the shade of the Tinwald Domain, where the children can feed the ducks… Leave the car in the shade and pop through the gate to The Plains and show the children around the expansive recreated pioneer village.
Let the youngsters imagine how the antique agricultural machinery once was used by their great grandparents…. And wonder how they lived in the little cottage without any electricity!
The littlies are all mad about Thomas the Tank Engine, why not treat them to a ride on a real life train on The Vintage Railway? Let them watch and listen as the engine puffs its way out of the station with a load of happy passengers aboard with smoke and steam coming from its funnel…

Charter visits to The Plains can be tailored and themed to suit any occasion (e.g. parties, special interest group outings, school heritage trips).
