Fire at The Plains
17 January 2015
As many of you will be aware, thanks to numerous news sites and radios stations picking up the story, one of our sheds was destroyed by fire this morning. Fortunately, unlike in early reports, it was not the loco shed that was razed, however it was damaged.
The building in question was the 'old workshop' and as such we haven't lost too much in the way of plant and spares. The Police and Fire Brigade have indicated it is extremely likely that it was burnt down in an arsonist attack.
This is, of course, a very disappointing way to start the year and we'll be cleaning up for a few days yet. As with all preservation sites, shed space is always at a premium and this fire makes it more so.
If you wish to make a donation towards the clean-up and construction of a new shed in the future (The Plains Museum is a large site and we've had to pick and choose what buildings are insured - this one is not), head to our GiveALittle Page: https://givealittle.co.nz/org/theplains - Every little bit helps!
A 64 takes a Holiday!
24 September 2014
Dubs & Co. 'A' 64 of 1873 is leaving The Plains for a month or two and heading up the road to the Canterbury Railway Societies Ferrymead Railway where it will be in action for their next few running days including this weekends 50th Anniversary of the CRS (September 27, 28). The Ferrymead Railway has an action packed weekend of trains planned for its 50th, so head along and see our little loco somewhere new! And we're sure she will look great with Ferrymead's extensive collection of 'period' wagons and carriages to tow around.
It's been a long time since 'A' 64 last ventured off Plains Railway metals to somewhere else, in fact the last time it left was for the Ferrymead 125 celebrations (125 years of railways) way back in 1988, so seeing the 'A' somewhere different is quite a rare event!
You can find our more about the Ferrymead Railway at their website: http://www.canterburyrailsociety.co.nz/ or on their Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/CanterburyRailwaySociety

29 April 2013
Our last running day of the 2012-2013 season is upon us and it's this SATURDAY May 4th.
This running day is part of Ashburtons annual Wheels Week so we're having a few extra to our train running; our McLaren Traction Engine will be in steam and we'll have a display of oil engines alongside our machinery collection. On the rail side we'll be running motorised Jigger rides and will be running 'mixed' trains in the afternoon - that is to say adding a few extra non-passenger wagons to the train.
As per usual, kick-off time is 11am running through til 4pm. Entry, as always is by donation and our usual ticket prices apply. Don't forget we now have EFTPOS which makes all your purchasing a lot easier!
